Along the fiery lakes of purgatory, Davyn finds himself searching for escape until he happens upon a solitary coin that summons the arrival of the Reaper. Refusing to accept his fate, Davyn chooses to dive into the fiery lake in hopes of choosing his own demise, only to find himself awake off the shores of his favorite fishing spot many years later. As Davyn prepares to venture home and reintroduce himself to the living, a terrible tragedy befalls him that intertwines his fate with that of the Reaper’s.
Reaper is a saga that balances the forces of life, death, and the tragedies that plague each plain of existence as the story unfolds.
1) What inspired you to write Reaper?
When I first became a fan of horror, I often delved into the nefarious side of the monsters and villains that make up the core of the genre. I was fascinated with the blood and gore often associated with scary movies of the 80s and 90s. When I first read the Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker and watched the first Hellraiser movie, I began to realize that the antagonist was not always a villain. Of course, Frank was the real villain in the Hellbound Heart, but Pinhead was also a villain of a different caliber. I became fascinated with him and the torment he endured while tormenting others, realizing that in terms of evil beings he was actually quite neutral, but also extremely feared despite his fairness. Around that time, I began to wonder what other villains were not exactly true villains, but vilified by association with their actions. Those thoughts led me to the Reaper/Death. I’ve always wanted to write a book about him as a character, exploring his nefarious acts, but adding a human element to them as well that makes the reader hate him and love him all the same. When the opportunity arrived to contribute to this project, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to finally write the story.
