Interview Questions:
What got you into writing in this genre?
I simply love zombies. The horror, the gore, the terror as they take over the world and people run for their lives. But I also love other types of apocalyptic stories. Any story where mankind has to fight for its survival is sure to make me come running.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing about five years now and have been self-publishing for about two years.
What is the writing process like for you? What is your writing day like? What have been the biggest influences on your writing?
A typical day for me starts around seven in the morning and can stretch to ten at night, especially when I have a deadline looming or if I’m launching a new book.. I do try to be flexible, though, and I take frequent breaks during the day to complete other chores, exercise, and relax. As for the way I write, I’m a pantser. I sit down and let the story flow on it’s own with no planning or plotting ahead. One of the biggest influences on my work is Rhiannon Frater. I absolutely love her stuff. She’s the best.
How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
I’ve grown in confidence, for sure, and my voice is a lot more distinct nowadays. I think I’m finally finding my feet and becoming the writer I’m supposed to be.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received from another author?Embrace the suck. Some days will be good, others bad. You just have to learn to push through it and keep going.
For those who haven’t read any of your stories, what story/book of yours do you think best represents your work and why?Last Another Day. It’s both the first book I wrote and still, today, a best seller. It represents not only what I stand for and my style, but also shows how far I’ve come!
What are you doing next?I’m working on a fresh zombie series called Gen Z, a project which is close to my heart because I promised to write it for an eleven-year-old fan of mine. This series will be YA, just like Death’s Children, so that she is allowed to read it, unlike most of my other works which are all too adult in nature for her.
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
You have to approach this as a business. If you cannot do that, you won’t succeed. While creativity is fresh and exciting, numbers are what drives sales, and while it’s not impossible, it’s unlikely you’ll make it big by luck alone.
