Interview – Simon Farrant – The Crucifix

Book Name and Description: The Crucifix

“When Mason Grey, a retired church minister, forms a new church at home, a cult is born. Inspired by Biblical killings, the cult hands out their own brand of rough justice.
Abbie, a founder member of his congregation, realises something’s not right with the cult’s actions, something feels off.
Will the cult succeed in their macabre machinations or have they met their match?”

Interview Questions:

What gave you the idea for The Crucifix?

My initial idea was to write about the gory killings that can be found in the Bible. I wanted to write about a character with disabilities like myself, and Mason Grey was born.

What got you into writing in this genre?

A friend of mine, Mrk Nye, happens to be a horror writer and an invitation to write a short story for an anthology sparked it all off.

How long have you been writing?

Only about 12 or 13 months.

Tell us about your past books and stories?

The crucifix is my first book, I have one called Famously Ordinary coming out in March and a collection of short stories co-written with Mark Nye hitting the shops this month (Feb) too called Anathema. My Favourite story in that is called Death Dolls, about a guy who makes products from human leather.

What is the writing process like for you? What is your writing day like? What have been the biggest influences on your writing?

Firstly thinking up an idea, and then evolving a loose story around this. Then I hit the keyboard and over time the tales shape up. Every day is different, my family has a fair few health problems, so I fit in writing where I can. Reading up on what makes up a story arc has really helped, as has using storyshop.io

What is your favorite book (other than your own book, of course) and why? What book disappointed you and why?

As a child, The Chronicals of Narnia was a favourite for the escapeism and the deeper meanings. The book after Hannibal (the cannibal…) was a disappointment because it felt like a sequel just for the sake of it.

What tools do you feel are must-haves for writers?

A sense of humour, patience, storyshop.io and a willingness to learn.

What piece of your own work are you most proud of?
Jointly Famously Ordinary as my first story and The Crucifix being my first self published. Famously Ordinary will be out as a novella in March all being well.

What are you doing next?

I am writing a series, the first book has been written and now with beta readers and the second is being written now. It is a fantasy series with paranormal aspects.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Give it a gom and ask for help; it is out there. You never know unless you try.
